Don't Let Someone Else's Opinion of Your Dream Become Your Reality

I just had a conversation that reminded me how easy it is to let other people's limited beliefs shape our own. If we’re not careful, we can find ourselves playing small, conforming to what others think is possible—their limitations don’t have to be yours.

Have you ever shared an idea or dream with someone, only to have them respond with doubt? Maybe they said, “That’s not realistic,” or “I wish life worked that way.” In those moments, did you hesitate? Did their uncertainty make you question what felt so clear to you just moments before?

Years ago, I shared my dream of traveling across Canada in a converted van, exploring, while sharing my Courage to Change Journal. I was met with a response that stuck with me: "If only we could live out such dreams."

At that moment, I realized something profound— their beliefs were influencing my progress or lack of.

Had I taken that comment to heart, I might have turned away from my dream. I might have let their doubt pour into mine own. Because let's face it, the crazier the dream the more second-guessing you do. Am I right? So taking on others' doubt don't help. I chose, instead, to use it as it as fuel. And now? I’ve traveled solo across Canada this way. Twice.

My Aunt Kathy recently shared a similar story. A boss once snapped at her in frustration, saying, “You’re just a dreamer.” But instead of taking offense, she took it as the highest compliment. Because if she hadn’t been a dreamer, she never would have traveled to the places she had or experienced the life she lives. That moment, for her, affirmed that she was on the right path.

In a world where so many of us are seeking approval and to find our place, dreamers can often feel like outcasts. But one thing I’ve discovered is that by bravely following your own dreams, you find others who have done the same. Conversations with fellow dreamers—some just beginning their journeys—have naturally found their way to me. And in those moments, I’ve realized that by living my dream, I help breathe vitality into theirs too.

And what about the naysayers? More often than not, they aren’t acting out of malice. Quite the opposite. They want to protect us—from the unknown, from disappointment, from a path they themselves have never walked. But just because a path is unfamiliar doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Use these moments as check points, to check in our yourself and your dreams. Get curious and honest with yourself. Is it what you still want? Are you willing to work through the hurldes (remember hurdles don't all come at once, you can do this).

So, I’ll ask you—where in your life have you let someone else’s limitations hold you back? What dream or goal have you tucked away because someone else couldn’t see it themselves?

This isn't just about travel. It’s about all the times we let someone else’s skepticism or small-mindedness plant doubt into our journey. It’s about the moments when we hesitate to take a leap because someone else doesn't understand or want it as badly as we do. I trusted and where I landed after I leaped was far better than I ever imangined. This could happen to you too!

I once read this quote from Les Brown: "Don't let someone else's opinion of you become your reality." I say this whoelheartedly abour our dreams too.

Don't let someone else's opinion of your dream become your reality.

So, what’s something you’ve been holding back on? Let this be your sign to go for it. It's your time!
